Spring Term 1

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Year One after a fabulous first term. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. The children made great progress through the Autumn term and I hope to continue in the same manner this term.

Learning Challenge Curriculum

Our topic this half term poses the question “What was Ben Rhydding Primary like in the past? The main objective we will cover is:

  • Identify significant historical events, people and places in their own locality

We are working towards holding an Open Museum session. More information about this will be given later in the half term.

English

We will focus on Little Red which about Little Red Riding Hood and has a modern twist. The children will continue to use capital letters, full stops and conjunctions in their writing.  We will introduce adding ed and ing to the end of verbs to change the tense.

Maths

We will build upon work on addition and subtraction from the autumn term and secure our knowledge of number bonds. We will also be looking at place value of numbers up to 50.

Science

Our science work this term will focus on materials. We will distinguish between objects and materials, learn about the properties of materials and investigate which materials are best for certain jobs.

Music

Music sessions will be covered by Ms Head. She will using our whole school scheme Charanga and will consist of singing and using some tuned and untuned instruments. The children will be introduced to different styles of music and have the opportunity to sing in that style.

P.E.

Our P.E. days are Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure that your child has their indoor P.E. kit in school on those days. Please can you make sure that all P.E. kit is named. Occasionally the children muddle up their clothes and it can be difficult to find the correct owner if the kit is not named. All of our sessions will be held indoors this half term.

GIRLS: Please make sure your daughters have socks in their PE bags. Many are wearing their tights under their shorts. These should be named as they are very easy to misplace.

Homework

Homework will continue to consist of a set of spellings and a maths task. It will be given out every Friday and the home learning books should be returned by Thursday the following week.

Reading Books

Book exchange takes place on Tuesday and Friday.

Please can all children have their reading books in their book bags even on the days when book exchange does not happen so that myself and Mrs McNee can hear them read.

Water Bottles

Please make sure your child has a water bottle in school every day. This will be sent home at the end of the day to be brought back in filled up for the next day.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all your support last term. The children are very positive about coming into school and are a wonderful cohort to teach.

Yours Sincerely,

Miss Lambert
